Methods are outlined for a series of bird monitoring applications at national, regional and local scales. The national Atlas of Bird Distribution provides an important baseline which, if the scheme is reinstated in future, will become an important resource. National censuses are possible for a number of key species. Local or regional surveys provide information on the responses of bird populations to changes in their environment, but multi-species studies need to be interpreted very carefully to ensure valid conclusions. Detailed ecological research is still needed for a number of our native landbirds so that the results of monitoring can be correctly interpreted. Several recommendations are made for future monitoring of native birds
