Stock assessment and monitoring of marine commercial fisheries
1989
Annala, J. (Fisheries Research Centre, MAFFish, Wellington (New Zealand))
The ability to adequately assess the stocks of many species of fish is very limited at the present time. Data on the population dynamics of most species are limited, and the knowledge available is imprecise. Shrinking budgets in real terms have resulted in the concentration of research on a few fisheries reducing the stock assessments for many species are based only on catch and effort data from the commercial fleet. Balanced against this uncertainty are the probable conservative nature of most yield estimates and increasing efforts to improve the quality of stock assessments
