A fishery for Munida gregaria [red krill] in New Zealand : ecological considerations

Large shoals of postlarval Munida gregaria are present during most summers in the coastal waters of the South Island, New Zealand. A fishery for the species is being considered primarily as a source of diet supplement for pen-reared salmon. The ecological attributes of M. gregaria populations in New Zealand are described. The fishery should begin after January of each year and be conducted throughout the range to maximise efficency and minimise the effect on invertebrates, fish, birds and mammals which prey on it. Capacity to store M. gregaria products for at least a year is also desirable
