Evidence suggests that cows with unusually concentrated milk could be milked once a day with no reduction in total solids yield. The paper outlines an experiment on a herd of Jersey cows with high or low milk solid content. Udder storage ability and tolerance to once a day milking were assessed during two stages of lactation. Udder storage tended to be greater in cows with high milk solids content. Percentage loss in milk yield during once a day milking in November averaged 14 and 18% with cows with high and low milk solids contents respectively, but losses for individual cows ranged from 3 to 47%. Factors which affect a cow's ability to tolerate once a day milking were not fully identified and further studies are planned
