The handling of the field latex as related to the growth of microorganisms and the concentrated latex quality

The number of microorganisms in the latex as related to the VFA number was studied in (1) the fresh latex, (2) the ammoniated field latex and (3) the concentrated latex from 5 factories. The results showed that the number of microorganisms in the fresh latex at the tapping area one hour after exposure to the open air was only 70 cells/ml with VFA No. 0.007. The population increased rapidly to 10 to the power of 5 cells/ml with VFA No. 0.029 when the latex was kept for 5 hours in clean cups. However, degradation of the latex was found when the latex was kept in dirty cups. This was shown by the rise in the number of microorganisms to 10 to the power of 7 cells/ml with the VFA No. increasing to 0.049. After centrifuging, an average of 25 percents of the VFA's of the ammoniated field latex was transmitted into the concentrated latex (CV=0.03) and an average of 0.04 percent of the microorganisms (CV=0.08) was also transmitted into the latex. It is suggested that the fresh latex at the tapper's bucket be treated with 20 percents solution of ammonia to achieve a final concentration of 3-3,5 gr/l latex. The latex at the collection tank should be treated with ammonia gas to make the dosage of the ammonia in the field latex in the range of 6-7 g/l latex.
