The rapid physical and biological changes taking place in and around the Segara Anakan have important consequence for the people who live on islands in the lagoon and in villages adjacent to it. The present study seeks to obtain basic factual data about demography, society and economy of these Kampung Laut people. Data were collected from local officials and by interview with selected households. The origin of the Segara Anakan people is not known but there is now little migration into the area and most people who reside there were born in area. Settlements appear to have been relocated over time to keep pace with the advancing shorelines of the lagoon. A number of socio-economic issues have been identified by this survey e.g. high dependency ratio, low incomes, and high levels of debt, lack of personal and family capital, and sanitation and water supply problems. Since 1970, there has been improvement in motor ferry transportation and this has allowed diversification of employment and increased the mobility of the Kampung Laut people.
