The economic consequences to milk production of a varying metabolizable energy (ME) content of the forage are predicted by means of a simulation model of a ley-ruminant system. The variation of the ME content is studied in relation to the key factors of harvest time, feeding plans, lactation curves and milk yields. The predictions are based on field data collected in 1986 and 1987. The economic result is strongly related to the shape of the lactation curve and to extent that forage is utilized in feeding. The higher forage rations in the feed the more influence the variation of the energy content has on the final economic result
