The influence of using ultraviolet water sterilizers on the results of carp artificial culture

There were tested several methods of removing the bacterial pollution of water running into a fish-hatchery of the Pohorelice State Fisheries at Velky Dvur, the pollution turned out to be an imminent cause of carp fry mass kill. The flowing-in water was sterilized by UV-radiation, chemical disinfection (formaldehyde, malachite green), by application of antibiotics (Chloramphenicol); there was made an attempt to increase carp fry resistance by means of bathing in a peptide solution (Dalargin). UV-radiation decreased significantly microorganism counts, prevented the rise of diseases and improved the fish production. The application of antibiotics deteriorated unbearably water quality, both its chemical indicators (higher turbidity of water, oxidizability, acidity, ammonia and nitrate concentrations) and bacteriological ones (an increase in the counts of microorganisms of all groups by at least one order). The rate of UV-radiation used for the culture of critical developmental states should be about 20 000 microW/s/cm2; the running water must be filtered before sterilization (to remove particles larger than 15 mm).
