In two self-incompatible lines of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea gongylodes) homozygous for various S-alleles the possibility of obtaining seeds by self pollination of the opened flowers was tested, the self incompatibility being suppressed by means of 1.5 per cent and 3 per cent NaCl solutions applied onto the inflorescence with a hand sprayer 0.5 - 1 hour before and after pollination. A highly significant effect on the seed setting in one pod was observed when the 3 per cent concentration of NaCl solution was used when compared with the 1.5 per cent solution. An important influence of the time of application on the seed setting was found only in one line when flowers were sprayed before pollination. A maximum seed setting was obtained in the individual lines: 5.2 and 7.3 on the average per one developed pod, i. e. 76 and 128 per cent of seed setting after self pollination in buds. An orientation test with bees as pollinators showed the possibility of using this method in seed production of Brassica hybrids parent lines on a large scale.
