Peanut planting time in a corn-peanut intercropping at dryland area of Kupang

A field experiment was conducted in Camplong II, Kupang, Nusa Tenggara Timur Province during wet season (WS) 1988/89 to study the effect of peanut planting time on corn-peanut intercropping system on grain yield of both crops. The treatment consisted of seven planting times of peanut in a corn-peanut intercropping system and two treatments of monocropping of corn and peanut arranged in randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Plant spacing of corn and peanut monocropping were 100 cm x 40 cm (2 plants/hill) and 40 cm x 20 cm (2 plants/hill) respectively. Corn intercropping was 200 cm x 40 cm spacing with 2 plants/hill). At every 2 rows of corn, 4 rows of peanut was planted with 40 cm x 20 cm plant spacing (2 plants/hill). The results indicated that the highest total yield (equivalent of corn) was found on intercropping system and which peanut and corn were planted at the same time. Delayed planting of peanut to 10 and 15 days after corn has been planted, resulted in reduced LER values of 1.11 and 1.08 respectively compared with those planted at the same time (1.46) as well as the total yield (equivalent of corn). But these LER are still higher than the monocrop system (1.0).
