Praomys angolensis (Bocage, 1890) and the identity of Praomys angolensis auct. (Rodentia: Muridae), with notes on their systematic positions [mice]

Praomys angolensis (Bocage, 1890) is a species described from Capangombe, Angola, whose name has been erroneously ascribed to another species ulteriorly collected in other parts of Angola, mainly in the interior plateau, where it is rather common. Therefore a new name to the second species is given in this paper, having the type-specimen been selected from the material housed in the Chicago Museum. The type-specimen of P. angolensis was destroyed in a fire and, as its skull was never examined, its position near to P. verraeuxi is merely conjectural; the new species, however, can be placed in the subgenus Mastomys, in spite of its low number of mammae, and perhaps in the affinity of P. shortridgei. The comparison of the new species with other Angolan and Southern African taxa of its kin is given here through a synoptic key

Praomys angolensis (Bocage, 1890) e uma especie descrita de Capangombe, cujo nome tem sido erroneamente atribuido a outra especie ulteriormente colhida em outras partes de Angola, principalmente no interior planaltico, onde e assaz comum. Por conseguinte e dado neste artigo um nome novo a essa segunda especie, tendo o respectivo exemplar-tipo sido seleccionado entre o material do Museu de Chicago. O exemplar-tipo de P. angolensis foi destruido num incendio e, como o cranio nunca fora examinado, a sua posicao proxima de P. verreauxi e puramente conjectural; a nova especie, contudo, pode ser classificada no genero Mastomys, apesar do seu baixo numero de mamilos, e talvez na afinidade de P. shortridgei. A comparacao da nova especie com outros taxa angolanos e austro-africanos afins e aqui apresentada mediante uma chave sinoptica
