The avifauna of Europe shows a decrease in populations and in the number of species. The impact of pesticides is often presumed to be one of the causes for this development. To prove this assumption a detailed knowledge of the application of pesticides is needed. In order to get this information, data from two inquiries on the application of pesticides in agriculture and forestry were compiled. The highest rate of pesticides application is found in the areas with intensive agriculture. Meadowland and forest are treated at a very low rate. The period of application often coincides with the breeding season of birds. Future investigation of pesticides must show if there is a causal relation between the application of pesticides and the decrease in bird populations or in the number of species. The presented data on the application of pesticides in cultivated areas should be used as a basis for such investigations
