Effects of a program supporting less extensive use on the combination of weed-species of marginal fields

The area at the base of the Meissner/Northern Hesse is characterized by a landscape rich in geological formations. In the fields which are mostly worked by part-time farmers many rare and threatened species of weeds can be found. During the last few years the use of field with low yields has increasingly changed supported by a program to use them less extensively. The present investigation presents an overview of the effects of changes in the use of marginal fields on the combination of species in plant communities with emphasis on rare weed-species and their communities. During the first year of abandonment weed-communities are usually rich in colourful plants and different species. If the soil is not disturbed annually, pasture and meadow plants take over in succeeding years. Seeding the fields and mulching prevent the development of rare weed-species as does frequent disturbing or breaking up the soil during each vegetation period
