The present study concerns food distribution and nutritional assessment in Chad in the context of famine relief in Africa. The study analyses particularly the incorporation of socio-economic indicators in the assessment of nutritional status and food needs in accommunity. The central role which anthropometry has played in nutritional evaluations in emergencies is challenged and alternative methods proposed. The objectives of the study were: to examine the usefulness of certain anthropometric indicators for screening malnourished children; to identify socio-economic indicators that describe existence and degree of malnutrition; to identify socio-economic indicators that describe the type of relief action to be undertaken; and to examine relevance, reliability and speed of application of potential indicators. The data used were from a feeding program carried out by the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (LEAGUE) in Chad during the famine of 1984-1986. The feeding program had two distribution pathways: the on-site wet supplementary feeding (distribution of pre-cooked porridge) and a dry distribution program (distribution of dry foods).
