The success of the silage conservation process depends not only on the number, but also on the composition and metabolic activity at the epiphytic LAB-population on the material ensiled. A population of only heterofermentative LAB is hardly able to produce enough lactic acid to achieve a well preserved silage, because the heterolactic pathway is ineffective to ferment the sugar available in grass. Adverse conditions of the epiphytic LAB-population in numbers or/and composition are possible to overcome by adding an active inoculant consisting of only one strain of Lactobacillus plantarum.
