Economics of seed production

A study was conducted at DA-IES to determine economics of seed production using corn, peanut, and mungo for two years. Two years results revealed that with the prevailing price of corn, peanut, and mungo seeds, it is more profitable to grow seeds than for commercial purposes except mungo grown during the dry season harvest where price of seeds equals commercial produce and private seeds are higher than the government support price. As such, it is recommended that seed cost of mungbean be increased. Among the critical factors identified in seed production are: isolation of corn, reguing of undesirable plants for all the crops, seed processing, and seed storage.
