The paper presents the concept of integrated pest management (IPM) and how it differ from the chemical-based pest control technology using Masagana 99 (M-99) as a case in point. Also highlighted are field data showing how IPM is perceived and received by farmer-users, particularly rice farmers of Central Luzon, Iloilo, and Laguna (specifically Calamba) [Philippines]. Policy recommendations from an economic viewpoint are presented. Regarding field level adoption of the technology, constraints are identified, and chances assessed.
