Nutrient concentration in soil and course of infection for rhizomania of sugar beets
1992
Buettner, G. (Institut fuer Zuckerruebenforschung, Gross-Gerau (Germany))
The influence of the nutrient salt concentration in the soil on the course of rhizomania was studied under green house conditions. Parameters were the density of the resting spores of Polymyxa betae and the content of beet necrotic yellow virus (BNYVV) in beet roots. Higher concentrations of ions in soil solution resulted in delayed attack of the fungus and reduced damage. Beet plantlets cultivated on soil more enriched with fertilizer showed better growth. The virus content and the amount of resting spores in their rootlets were lower compared with controls. The importance of the virus vector Polymyxa betae for the outbreak of the rhizomania disease is discussed
