Insulin and glucose levels in calves in the first six months of life

Twenty four calves of the Holstein-Friesian breed were included into a trial. The objective of the study was to investigate variations in insulin and glucose levels over a longer time period of the postnatal development of calves. The calves were fed milk till the age of 26 or 28 days, after a fortnight the feed intake was increased from the previous 3 litres to 5-6 litres per head/day. At the age of 26 days calves were fed a commercial milk replacer diluted at a 1:1O ratio, the feed intake being 6-8 litres a day, and a commercial pelleted calf starter TKS at the amount of 1.O-1.1 kg. Hay was administered ad libitum. The average insulin concentration in the blood serum of calves ranged from 9.21 micro U/ml (day 3) to 59.14 micro U/ml (day 21) in the test period. At the age of 28 days a significantly lower insulin level was recorded in the calves on a diet consisting of milk replacer, commercial pelleted calf starter and hay, against the calves on a native milk diet. In the test period the glucose level ranged from 9.O9 +/- 3.97 mmol/l to 2.98 +/- O.3O mmol/l. The average glucose level was irregularly decreasing with the age of calves. At the age of 28 days there was no difference in the glucose level for the tested types of diet.
