[Isolation of Salmonella sp. from animal carcass slaughtered in abattoirs]
1988
Poernomo, S. (Balai Penelitian Veteriner, Bogor (Indonesia))
In previous abattoir surveys conducted in Yogyakarta (1985), Pontianak (1986) and Semarang and Solo (1988), carcass specimens were collected from 99 cattle in Yogyakarta, 7 in Pontianak, 80 and 20 in Semarang and Solo; from 10 pigs in Pontianak, 60 in Semarang, and 20 in Solo; and from 37 and 24 goats in Semarang and Solo respectively. In the laboratory of Balai Penelitian Veteriner (BALITVET) Bogor, the specimens were processed for Salmonella isolation. Salmonella lexington and S. weltevreden were isolated from two carcass (2 pct.) of 99 cattles in Yogyakarta; S. weltevreden from 5 pct. of 20 pigs in Solo and S. lexington from 2.7 pct. of 37 goats in Semarang. These isolated Salmonella were sensitive to Streptomycine 10 i.u., trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 1.25 + 23.75 micro grams, neomycine 30 i.u., kanamycine 30 i.u., furanes 300 micrograms, chloramphenicol 30 micrograms, gentamycine 15 micrograms, sulfamides 200 micrograms, ampicilline 10 micrograms, and oxytetracycline 30 i.u., but they were resistant to erythromycine 15 i.u. The number of Salmonella isolates from each animal species is very low, however these findings form the principal foundation for further study, because meat of these animals is widely consumed by human.
