The currently observed phenomenon of rapid climatic changes affecting the atmosphere across the globe, whether they are caused by the greenhouse effect or not, should give food for thought on the place of agroforestry systems in the support of life on the planet earth. The author applies the current concept of 'soft' environmental engineering to the use of the sago palm in water and atmosphere improvement. The working of soft environmental engineering is itself explained and how, through use of its techniques, sago may be beneficially applied to the treatment of industrial, agro-industrial and domestic effluents taking into consideration, the impact of possible pollutants on the growth of the palm itself and, the food safety of the principal product, starch. The relationship of the culture of the palm to the impending rise in sea level is also considered
