The influence of organic matter on the efficacy of nematode-trapping fungi in reducing the early penetration of rape roots by Heterodera schachtii was tested in greenhouse experiments. Rape and mustard as green manure (1 % and 3 %, w/w) and barley straw (1 %, w/w) were used as organic amendments in an unsterilized field soil-sand mixture. Five fungal strains were used as inoculum. The pots were inoculated after 14 weeks of organic matter decomposition. Early root penetration by H. schachtii was reduced significantly (p = 0,05) in the fungal-treated mustard-amended soil 30-35 % and 29 % in straw-amended soil when compared to the non-inoculated control. The fungi had no effect on H. schachtii penetration in the rape-amended treatment and in the unamended control. The differences in the level of biological control may have been caused by a variation in the utilization of the organic matter by the fungal strains
