Fecundity and egg laying dynamics of Baris coerulescens Scop. (Col., Curculionidae) on oilseed rape. Effects of cultivar and plant size under controlled conditions

Baris coerulescens Scop. (Col., Curculionidae) lays its eggs in the root crown of Brassica napus L. var. oleifera Metzger. Larvae are the main cause of damage as they mine the root. In a growth chamber (L16:D8, 20:18 degrees C) isolated couples were given root crowns cut from plants grown in pots. Total fecundity on cultivars Bienvenu (330 eggs) and Darmor (366 eggs) did not differ significantly though laying lasted significantly longer on cultivar Darmor. Differences in the egg laying dynamics are attributed to differences in the phenological development of the two cultivars rather than differences in glucosinolates content. Females laid significantly more eggs in big plants than on small ones. Plant size affects the repartition of eggs among plants. Discrimination between plants according to their size happens also under field conditions
