Fifty sources of resistance to angular leaf spot (Phaeoisariopsis griseola) have been identified or reconfirmed among 322 accessions/lines tested in the nurseries BALSIT, PRELAAC-3 and PRER-2 in Mulungu. Incorporation of a resistant variety (A285) in the local mixture in proportions of 25, 50 and 75 proved to be an efficient mean to reduce severity of air-borne diseases like angular leaf spot. Yield was significatly increased in Miti with 50 and 75 of the resistant variety in the local mixture; in Katana and Mudaka the same tendency, though without significant differences, was observed. Comparison of different proportions of the resistant variety with or without fungicide application revealed a decrease of diseases with fungicide application but no significant effect on yield has been observed, neither between the different proportion of the resistant variety, nor between treatments with or without fungicide. Combinations of 25 to 50 of a resistant variety in the local mixture could still be interesting for the small farmers of the region.
