Use of soil amendments in the management of root rots of beans

The effect of amending soil with green leaves of Leucaena leucocephala (LGM) (ratio of 1:1, v:v), farm yard manure (FYM) (2:1), decomposing coffee pulp (CP) (2:1) and Furadan on severity of root rots of beans was studied on soil naturally infected with root rot pathogens, in greenhouse pot expt. LGM was effective in suppressing root rot severity while increasing plant vigour and DM production. CP initially resulted in damping-off and low seedling emergence due to its water retention effects on soil but subsequent decomposition resulted in high DM production. FYM had no effect on disease severity while Furadan showed phytotoxicity. Seed treatment with benomyl had a slight but insignificant increasing effect on emergence. The effect of LGM is attributed to its fast decomposition, microbial activity and nutritional effects. These results demonstrate the potential value and effects of some organic amendments on root rot severity, which need verification under field conditions. (AS)
