Diets for rumen-fistulated, lactating cows were composed to provide different values for PBV. Rumen parameters examined were pH, VFA and ammonia concentrations, number of protozoa (holotrichs and entodiniomorphs), flagellates (fungal zoospores), numbers and predominant types of total culturable bacteria and numbers and types of cellulolytic bacteria. In general, differences in results obtained with different diets showed little relationship to differences in PBV values of the diets. Significant differences in the proportions of numerically dominant bacteria as well as of types of cellulolytic bacteria were related to roughage types (silage or hay) rather than to PBV which varied between -500 and 460 g crude protein per kg of dry matter.
