Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) and narrowleaf birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus tenuis Wald. and Kit.) under pure and mixed (with Dactylis glomerata L.) stand conditions [with reference to breeding programs inumbria]

Nine populations of L. corniculatus and three of L. tenuis have been evaluated under pure and mixed (with Dactylis glomerata L.) dense stand conditions in 1987 for the following characters: flowering date, dry matter yield at two cuts, percentage of crude protein, crude fiber, ash, in vitro dry matter digestibility, milk feeding units and meat feeding units. L. tenuis was late in respect to L. corniculatus and yielded much more at the first cut, producing, as an average on pure and mixed stands, 4700 Meat Fu ha-1 versus 2760 Meat Fu ha-1 of L.corniculatus. On the contrary, in pure stand, at the second cut L. corniculatus produced more than L. tenuis (504 versus 290 Meat Fu ha-1). Differences among populations were found only within L.corniculatus: in pure stand Macerata and Canetra were the best (3595 and 3284 Meat Feedingunits ha-1) at the first cut, Polcanto (913 Meat Fu ha-1) at the second cut. Differences between species and among populations are due to the combined action of two factors:yield and nutritive value. Yield alone is a good criterion of choice only when a great difference in yield among species and/or populations is present. Presence of interaction Population x Type of stand (mixed or pure) for some of the examined characters suggests that qualitative evaluation of legume forage should be done on forage produced with the proposed companion grass if we are breeding a variety to be used in mixed stands. Reasonable agreement was found between qualitative data collected at first and second cut in pure stand

In purezza al secondo taglio e stato L. corniculatus a fornire una maggiore quantita di uFC rispetto a L. tenuis (504 contro 290 UFC ha-, rispettivamente per le due specie). Differenze fra popolazioni sono state messe in evidenza solo entro L. corniculatus: al primo taglio di buon valore sono risultate le popolazioni Canetra e Macerata, al secondo, Polcanto. Le differenze fra specie e fra popolazioni sono il risultato della combinazione di due fattori: produttivita e caratteristiche chimico nutrizionali dei foraggi. La quantita di foraggio prodotta, infatti, puo' essere un buon criterio di scelta solo quando esista un grande divario in produttivita.
