Growth of 24 full-sib families of Pinus sylvestris at six relative nutrient addition rates, 1: Differences in relative growth rates during the steady state period

Differences in relative growth rates (Rg) of 24 full-sib Scots pine families, grown under nutrient steady state conditions, have been investigated. The seedlings were raised under controlled light and temperature conditions at six different relative nutrient addition rates, Ra=1% to Ra=6%, using specially designed growth units. Steady state as achieved only for relative addition rates in the range of 1% to 3% and we have excluded higher addition rates in the analyses of the present study. In order to have a sufficient number of seedlings per family, the experiment was repeated six times. The plants were weighed weekly to monitor the relative growth rate (Rg) of each family. Under the present growth conditions we found no differences between families in their Rg. From the results we make the interpretation that there are small and non-significant differences between Pinus sylvestris genotypes in the utilization efficiency of nutrients. However, the sample of pine families was small and may be to restricted. Further studies are required to establish whether genetic differences can be found in other components of nutrient efficiency, e.g. in the efficiency of nutrient uptake or in pattern of biomass allocation.
