Weed control in winterspelt based on mechanical and chemical methods

In a herbicide-tolerance-trial the reaction of three winterspelt cultivars (Schwabenkorn, Rouquin, Ostro) was investigated on the effects of two mechanical and twelve chemical methods of weed control, especially three sulfonylurea-herbicides (Gropper, Concert, Pointer). The results of the trial can be summarized as follows: 1. The location of the trial was characterized by a high coverage of weeds (diameter 114 plants/square metre). As dicotyle main weed species appeared wild chamomille, cornspurrey, common forget-me-not, chickweed and climbing buckwheat. The only monocotyl weed species was wind bentgrass, which with 77% of the total number of weeds was represented. 2. Herbicides which are not suitable to control grass weeds due to their active ingredients (Trevespan, Faneron fl., U 46 D-Fluid, Gropper, Pointer) had insufficient effect on weeds. Specific herbicides against grass weeds (Arelon fl., Dicuran 700, Concert and Tribunil) reduced the weed number effectively. 3. Weed control using calcium cyanamide fertilizer in one dose in fine grind form (300 kg/ha) had good herbicide effect, whereas the splitting up into two doses had an unsatisfactory effect on the coverage of weeds. 4. Weed control based on mechanical methods could not reduce the number of weeds sufficiently (handhoe -52,3%; harrow -33,6%). 5. The spelt Schwabenkorn reacted to the mechanical methods and herbicide-application with increases in grain yield. Such increases were obtained after application of Tribunil, Gropper + Arelon fl., U 46 D-Fluid and Arelon fl. In the group of the sulfonylurea-herbicides, Concert achieved a better result than Pointer and Gropper. Mechanical methods of weed control caused increases at 3%
