Malaysian tropical rain forests are endowed with numerous timber species which might be suitable for forest plantation. Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) since its inception in 1920's has initiated programmes to establish plantations of indigenous timber species under different site conditions with a view to screen and select the potential indigenous species for future reforestation programme. This paper describes the experience gained by FRIM with regard to the use of some indigenous non-dipterocarp species. Botanical aspect, seed collection, nursery practices, and growth performance of the species are highlighted, while the problems and prospect of using indigenous species are discussed.
