The objective of the present study is to develop a suitable bottom trawl gear both for research surveys and commercial fishing offshore. Four models (Model I, II, III and IV) of bottom trawl nets were used. Model I and II made of nylon material is constructed in Japan, while Model III (polyethylene material) and Model IV (nylon material) were constructed locally. Three different types of groundrope were used. These were hanging chain, rubber bobbins and rubber disks groundropes. Results showed that all models performed well in water. Model IV (bigger twine) proof the strongest net. Groundrope made from tyre disks protect the net better and more lasting than the other groundrope types. Modification to the otterboards, stern roller, sweep wire and deck arrangement for trawl operation improved the efficiency and hauling procedures on board K.K. Manchong
