The main rainfed barley area of Egypt is the Northwest Coast, extending from Alexandria to the Libyan border, a region about 500 km long and 5-70 km wide. The major agricultural activity is livestock production, to which barley contributes an important component of food. Climate and weather conditions as well as the topography and hydrology of the area are described. Six agricultural environments are distinguished according to their ecological characteristics. The barley-livestock farming system, spanning several of these environments, is described in detail and its problems discussed
