The digestive utilization of nutrients and energy in the Guinea pig and rabbit

Английский. Guinea pigs and rabbits are mini-livestock, which are usually fed on food wastes. In order to compare nutrient utilization and metabolic efficiency of these herbivores, an in vivo digestibility trial was performed on 12 Guinea pigs and 11 rabbits, fed the same diet, with 20% proteins and 21% crude fibre. The voluntary feed intake, the digestive utilization of organic matter, nutrients and energy, as well as the metabolizable energy of the feed were determined. The feed intake per unit of live weight and both the digestive and the metabolic utilization of energy did not result significantly different in the two species. Guinea pigs digested proteins and lipids significantly less than rabbits (respectively 4 and 19% less), but utilized fibre better (23% more) and, from an energy standpoint, compensated in this way the losses due to the lower absorption of other nutrients. Thus Guinea pigs appear to be rather rustic, suited to be efficiently fed on roughages. This peculiarity could be due to the capacity observed in this species of modifying the characteristics of the excreta by separation mechanism and of improving the digestibility by reingestion

Al fine di confrontare l'efficienza alimentare e metabolica di questi erbivori, e' stata condotta una prova di digeribilita' in vivo su 12 cavie e 11 conigli alimentati con un medesimo mangime al 20% di proteine e al 21% di fibra grezza. E' stata controllata l'introduzione volontaria di alimento, l'utilizzazione digestiva della sostanza organica, dei principi alimentari e dell'energia e i valori in energia metabolizzabile dell'alimento. L'introduzione di alimento per unita' di peso vivo e l'utilizzazione sia digestiva che metabolica dell'energia non sono state significativamente diverse tra le due specie. Le cavie hanno digerito le proteine e i grassi significativamente meno dei conigli (rispettivamente del 4 e del 19%), mentre hanno meglio utilizzato la fibra (23% in piu'), compensando, sotto il profilo energetico, la perdita dovuta al minor assorbimento degli altri principi.
