Reports on experiments conducted to evaluate the role of high quality silages in finishing diets for cattle. Diets containing varying percentages of grains with silage were fed to steers to determine the most cost effective means of producing 200 to 220 kg carcasses for the domestic trade. The conclusion was that high quality silages can be used to replace a substantial proportion of the grain in finishing diets for cattle. These diets will support satisfactory animal performance, produce high quality carcasses and meat suitable for the domestic market, and significantly improve returns per head
