Relationships between extractable Al, selected soil properties, pH buffer capacity and lime requirement in some acidic Queensland soils

Aluminium was extracted from 60 soils using each of 4 different chloride salts. The amounts of Al extracted by the chlorides were in the order Cu, La, K, Ca. Although all soils were mineral soils, there was no correlation between clay content and Al extraction, while Cu and La extracted Al were correlated with organic C content. Cu extracted Al was strongly correlated with pH buffering capacity; however, a change in cation exchange capacity with pH accounted for 76 percent of the variation in pH buffering, so that not all is attributable to hydrolysis of Al adsorbed on organic matter. The ability of Cu and La extractable Al to predict lime requirements depended on the target pH: La being useful up to 5.5, Cu between 5.5 and 6.5.
