Post-mortem examinations of 950 sheep are described and discussed. Deaths were assigned amongst 5 categories: inanition, salmonellosis, trauma, excessive feed intake syndromes, and miscellaneous diseases of farm origin. During assembly, salmonellosis was the dominant cause of death (53 percent), while during shipping, inanition dominated (43 percent). Good sheep husbandry at all stages should reduce all but these 2 to acceptable levels, but the origins of salmonellosis and inanition require further research.
