Influence of high temperature on protein metabolism in growing pigs

Gives detailed results of experimental work carried out to determine the interactions between physiological changes, voluntary food intake and heat production of finisher pigs exposed to either short term or long term constant temperatures above the zone of thermal comfort. In order to minimize constraints on pig production in Australia caused by high ambient temperature, it is necessary to develop a model which will predict the relationship between heat exchange and ambient temperature for pigs. An effective model requires an accurate assessment of the heat exchange between the animal and its environment, knowledge of the physiological mechanisms involved in altering the rate of heat exchange and description of the associations between these physiological responses and voluntary food intake. The work here was designed to provide information on these relationships to develop such a model.
