Four main categories of land-use can be recognised, depending on the degree of impact: 1. Complete removal of the vegetation and disruption of ecological processes, such as occurs during urban development and mining. 2. Removal of vegetation and replacement with intensively managed systems such as agriculture or plantation forestry. 3. Utilization of existing vegetation with some consequent modification, as in pastoralism and timber harvesting in native forests. 4. Conservation with minimum deliberate modification. The imposition of these new disturbance regimes has commonly resulted in the alteration of the vegetation to new metastable states, often with accompanying land degradation. Broad guidelines are presented for rehabilitation and reconstruction of ecosystems based on treatment of these impacts.
