Suspected packalacca (Phytolacca dioica) poisoning of cattle and chickens. [Short contribution]

The deaths of 6 dairy cows with free access to packalacca trees occurred on a farm in south-east Queensland, but experiments in which calves were dosed with the unripe fruit did not reproduce the severe intestinal lesions seen in the field. In a second incident the history of consumption of the fruit and leaves fowls, the recovery of affected birds after denial of access to the tree, and the good health of a second group of fowls fed the same ration but denied access to the tree, suggested poisoning by P. dioica fruit, leaves or both. The 2 incidents suggest that P. dioica fruit should be considered potentially toxic to livestock.
