In conclusion, before biotechnology can be applied to improve production efficiency of domestic animals, a detailed knowledge of the genetic control of growth and the physiology and biochemistry of the regulatory factors must be clearly understood. This is best illustrated by the failure of simple and direct approaches, such as the effects that the ST:IGF axis has on growth cannot be entirely attributed to increased circulating or tissue IGF-I concentrations, but any changes in IGFBP/STBP physiology must be considered. It may be for example, that for exogenous IGF to be effective in domestic animals, coadministration of IGF and the IGFBPs may be required
