At the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition, Department of Animal Science, a research was carried out in order to study the availability, nutritive value and silage process of five horticulture crop residues: tomatoes (Lycopersicum esculentum), celery (Apium graveolens), broad bean (Vicia faba), melon (Cucumis melo), French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Residual phytomass, Dry Matter, and nutritive value was determined on each one. Collected residual biomass was chopped to 1" and ensiled under manual pressure in 4 L. plastic microsilages. Dynamics of fermentation process was studied by opening microsilages at 5 - 10 - 15 - 30 days and pH, DM, CP, GE, NDF, digestibility, N-NH3, VFA and lactic acid were determined. Dry matter availability/ha was: tomatoes: 4.2 tons/ha; celery; 2.2 tons/ha; melon: 1.8 tons/ha; broad beans: 3.8 tons/ha and french beans: 3.2 tons/ha. Dry matter of residues was: tomatoes: 13%; celery: 10%; melon: 15% broad beans: 22% and french beans: 23%. Crude protein level of residues fluctuated between 10 to 18%; NDF between 20 to 39%; digestibility between 67 to 81% and ashes between 13 to 28%. French bean, celery, tomato and broad bean residues developed fermentation processes similar to those observed in good quality silage, with fast decrease of pH to 3.8-4.5; production of high levels of lactic acid (40-90 g/kg DM) and low levels of acetic and butyric acids. Melon silage developed butyric fermentation, without any decrease of pH and very low levels of lactic acid. It is concluded that is possible to store these horticulture residues (except melon residue) as silage, being the main limiting factors the high moisture and ash levels of residues
