The imminent expansion of the Burdekin River Irrigation Area, Queensland, has led to the compilation of a regional soil database. Soil physical and chemical data, together with varying water regimes, have been used within a salt mass balance model. Predictions of deep drainage losses have been presented within a framework of landscape units and agronomic groups. Predicted values are: dryland (less than 2 to greater than 50 mm per yr) and irrigation (less than 26 to greater than 500 mm per yr). The values can also be used as averaged inputs to a groundwater model to determine watertable rises under sustained irrigation.
