Forbs, when present, were significant in the diet. On Astrebla pastures, but not on Mulga grassland, they had a higher nutrient concentration than did the leaves of green grasses. In drought, grasses were the major components of diet on Astrebla pastures whereas at least 35 percent of the diet on mulga grasslands was mulga (Acacia aneura); here, some mulga was always present in the diet. Grasses and forbs on the mulga site had lower P and Na concentrations than those on Astrebla grassland. On Mitchell grassland, nutrients were adequate unless the pastures dried out, when N, P, Na and Cu were low. On mulga grasssland, P and Na were always low, and the N:S ratio fell to 16.8:1 in drought.
