A survey of honeybee pollination services in Victoria. [Project report - DAV 011H]

Apiarists, and growers of crops that benefit from honeybee pollination, were surveyed to determine: (a) the current use of bees for pollination; (b) strengths and weaknesses in the delivery and usage of commercially managed honeybee pollination services; (c) research and extension requirements of each group; (d) the potential for future growth of pollination services. Apiarists considered pollination services as a valuable diversification. Growers were generally happy with the service provided, but there was a general lack among growers of understanding regarding honeybee management. Apiarists were concerned about risks of pesticide damage and unreliable payment for their services. There is an urgent need for information about the needs of each group among the members of the other. The potential for growth of the pollination industry depends critically upon the provision of that information.
