Queensland strawberry production is about 2,400 tonnes or about 20 percent of Australian production. An exploratory fruit and vegetable retailer and consumer study was undertaken as part of the project "Improvement of the Marketing Performance of Queensland Strawberries". The key marketing issues arising from this study were packaging, product quality, strawberry usage, appeal of strawberries and price resistance. Most common marketing improvement suggestions by retailer were: promotion in winter and spring; overall lower prices; improved presentation; and stricter quality control. Other comments of interest were: more consistent price; more in-store demonstrations; development of longer lasting varieties; cardboard dividers in cartons; improved strawberry flavour; lidded punnets; use stronger cartons; more plates and 500 gram packs; ensure even colour berries in punnets; and the provision of information on how to keep strawberries.
