Two consumer surveys were undertaken in Melbourne, Victoria, to determine attitudes towards navel and valencia oranges. The first survey found that most consumers purchased oranges at least fortnightly, preferred to buy them loose and bought them mainly to be eaten as fresh fruit. The most important aspect when selecting oranges was colour. The majority of respondents interviewed in the second survey said they would most likely buy a navel in preference to a valencia because of its preferred colour. There was no significant preference for either orange on the basis of taste. Recommendations are made to assist growers to compete more effectively against navel oranges from California.
