[Possible development of soybean farming in upland area of Jratunseluna watershed]

In the last 10 years, the demand for soybean consumption in Indonesia has been increasing at a greater rate than the domestic production. This has resulted in the increase of soybean import annually in 1989, the soybean import has reached more than 563000 tons. In response to this situation, the government has promoted soybean production through developing new potential regions. One possible alternative is by growing soybean in the upland-watershed regions. Research results from Jratunseluna watershed in Boyolali district indicated that farmers positively responsive to soybean cultivation. This can be seen from the rapid increase of soybean cultivation in the area as well as changing in their cropping pattern due to technology transfer and diffusion process. In the rainfed areas, most farmers grow soybean twice, while in dryland (tegalan) only once a year. The use of high yielding soybean varieties is still limited, and fertilizer application is inadequate, resulted in marginal land condition. Economically, soybean cultivation by farmers has a feasible benefit, that is more than Rp.300,000/ha. The annual contribution of soybean cultivation to the gross income in rainfed and dryland farming is ranging from 16 to 46 percent.
