Evaluation of a pasture management program for dairy farmers in west and south Gippsland [Victoria]

As part of a development project with the aim of increasing the consumption of pasture on Victorian dairy farms, a course was conducted in pasture management for farmers. Attending farmers were surveyed to assess whether the course had achieved its immediate aims. In addition, the pasture consumption on the farms of a random sample of attenders was compared with that of a similar sample of non-participant farmers. It is concluded that the course increased both the understanding of, and the attitude towards, intensive pasture management among participating farmers; and that participant farmers achieved a significantly higher increase in pasture consumption in the subsequent year than non-participants.
