[Root development of Mangifera indica L. in response to grafting, age of the tree, and soil texture]

The objective of this work was to measure, through excavation, the growth and characteristics of the roots in mango seedling rootstocks (Mangifera indica L.), grafted with the cultivars Haden and Tommy Atkins, which were 4, 6 and 8 years old, cultivated in soils of different texture: Sandy-clay-loam (Las Varas, county of Compostela), clay loam (Huaristemba, county of San Blas), and clay (Atonalisco, county of Tepic). From the results, the largest canopy vigor of the cultivar Haden was related with a greater longitudinal growth and thickness of its roots. As the mango tree grew it showed increments in number, thickness and length of roots, both in horizontal and vertical directions. In the clay soils it was found a lesser number of roots, these being thicker but shorter than in the sandy-clay-loam soil. The root system was localized under the canopy projection area. The height of trees was a good indicator of the magnitude and vigor of the root system.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue conocer, mediante excavacion, el desarrollo y caracteristicas de las raices de portainjertos criollos de mango (Mangifera indica L.) originados por semilla e injertados con los cultivares Haden y Tommy Atkins de 4, 6 y 8 anos de edad, cultivados en suelos de textura diferente: franco-arcillo-arenosa (Las Varas, Mpio. de Compostela), arcilla franca (Huaristemba, Mpio. de San Blas) y arcilla (Atonalisco, Mpio. de Tepic). Segun los resultados, el mayor vigor en la parte aerea del cultivar Haden se relaciono con un mayor crecimiento longitudinal y en grosor de las raices. Con la edad, el arbol de mango incremento su cantidad, grosor y longitud de raices, tanto en el sentido horizontal como el vertical. En los suelos de textura arcillosa se encontro una menor cantidad de raices, tendiendo a ser estas mas gruesas pero de menor longitud que en el suelo de textura franco-arcillo-arenosa. El sistema radical siempre se ubico dentro de la zona de proyeccion de la copa del arbol. La altura del arbol se mostro como buen indicador de la magnitud y vigor del sistema radical.
