Reaction of the exocrine pancreatic tissue to the changes in the structure of the diet

The researches aimed at studying the secretor activity of the exocrine pancreatic tissue in fattening pigs according to various diets. A number of 4, 70 kg pigs was used in the experiment as follows: 3 controls slaughtered ante-and post-prandially; 1 experimental slaughtered intraprandially after ingestion of enzymatycally pre-digested protein feed. The pancreas samples were processed according to the usual techniques for both optical and electronic microscopy. The optical microscopy revealed that in the controls slaughtered ante-and post-prandially the pancreatic tissue has a normal aspect with rather large amounts of zymogen granules distributed relatively uniformly in most of the acinar cells, sometimes with a preponderant apical disposition. In the control animal slaughtered post-prandially the characteristic modification is the reduced degranulation of the acinar cells; in the experimental animal which received the enzymatically pre-digested protein feed several changes were noticed such as: cytoplasm removal in the acinaric cells and sometimes the presence of nuclei with picnotic aspect, all these suggesting a slight reduction of the secretor activity. The ultrastructural changes show a stimulation of the secretor activity of the pancreas in normal post-prandial conditions and a slight reduction of this activity after intraprandial administration of a protein feed enzymatically pre-digested with pancreatic exoenzymes.
